The end result

There’s a forum post here which describes the process, but I found this was a pretty nifty little trick that’s handy to know. You use the Create Fishnet tool to do it.

To start, you must have:

1. A 2D map with something on it

2. An existing layout with a map frame you are happy with

From there, basically follow the screenshot from the original post:

Personally, I set the geometry type to “Polygon” since you can use it as a mask or clipper more easily that way, and disabled labels. Either way works depending on what you are going for.
